The Shigu River in Gaochun County, renowned for its natural, economic, and cultural significance, served as the foundation for OVERLAND’s master planning efforts. To preserve and highlight these aspects, OVERLAND designed an eco-landscape that safeguards local communities while attracting regional and international visitors.

The “first bend in the Yangtze River” at Shigu, with its strategic historical importance and stunning natural beauty, stands out as a major regional attraction. Recognizing the potential threat from increased tourism, OVERLAND, in collaboration with ARUP Shanghai, proposed a strategic plan to protect the river’s integrity while enhancing tourism infrastructure and accessibility.

The master plan emphasizes three distinct experiences along the river. The northern ecological node offers exploration by kayak, bicycle, and foot, with educational and nature-focused features including a wetland demo and other ecological interpretive elements. The central heritage node highlights local aquaculture traditions, allowing visitors to observe authentic local practices such as crab and lotus farming at a floating market. The southern urban node, envisioned as a Central Park, hosts entertainment like concerts and events, fostering community engagement.

Interconnected pedestrian pathways enhance visitor immersion and understanding of the environment through an extensive interpretive trail system. This sustainable development plan aims to restore the region’s ecology while celebrating its cultural heritage.

We want to plan for the future with you.
