The Pout House is a hidden retreat on a tract of land in West Texas. The landscape is the protagonist: informing the design, enhancing the activity and providing the backdrop from which all decisions are weighed. The cabin provides support during excursion outings, comfort during group gatherings, and respite and reflection during quiet retreats.

The design is compact, but flexible. The main living space is sized for a small group, but can be expanded to the outdoor terrace to accommodate larger gatherings. The primary space has sleeping accommodations for two people, but a secondary structure, independent of the primary, can be opened only when needed and accommodate four additional people.

“The Hideout” celebrates the site in all aspects of its design and experience. Expansive views are enhanced through its orientation and framing. Its performance, efficiency and comfort will be maximized with how it inhabits the land and leverages existing natural resources. Its construction will be simple and materials selected will be appropriate to this West Texas context not just for how they look, but how they act.

The structure will be informed by the land and the weather patterns of the site. It will allow ample natural light while shading inhabitants from the hot Texas sun. It will open to cooling breezes and deflect the harsh winter winds.
